This lovely mid-20th century print is from a painting by Leonard Russell Squirrell, an award-winning English watercolorist and etcher who also taught art, wrote books on watercolor and pastel techniques and produced illustrations.
The image here, I feel sure, came from "Shakespeare-Land" -- one in the legendary "Our Beautiful Homeland" series published by Blackie & Sons (London and Glasgow). It's titled "High Street, Stratford-upon Avon".
Apart from the presence of an auto that looks like a 1930s model and the length of skirts on the woman and girl, the image could easily be 19th century -- which is the charm of English towns and villages, as well of Squirrell's style.
Although he lived between 1893 and 1979, the artist was often called "the last member of the Norwich school" -- a movement of pre-Victorian painters acclaimed for their romantic landscapes from 1803 to 1833. Like them, Squirrel traveled in youth to Italy and France and was influenced by the continental style. That he further benefited from training as an architect is evident in his fine streetscapes.
Obviously this would be a fabulous gift for any lover of Shakespeare. The print is in excellent condition, with a contemporary mat and giltwood frame. Frame size is 10" x 12" and the exposed image area is 5 1/4" x 7 3/8". Glazing is regular glass, since we feel the non-glare type kills the colors.
Provenance is a dealer in East Anglia, where Squirrel was born and resided through most of his life. The museum in Ipswich, his native city, houses a large collection of Squirrell paintings, etchings and prints, which are enjoying a booming market throughout England today. Several books were recently written about the artist.
