English blue and white transfer printed plate by Clews, Staffordshire, c 1820. Clews (1818-1834) produced patterns with American motifs, for the American market. This pattern, however, is of a guide, demonstrating Italian classical ruins to a lady traveller who is seated on a donkey, all viewed as from inside a grotto, and in a soft blue shade. Interesting small Chinese plate with foliated rim, probably Guangxu period (1875-1908). The glaze is a monochrome but vibrant powder blue, also covering the whole back of the item, where a small impressed or incised mark is visible. Diam: "7 ½ /19 cm. Condition: glaze bubbles and minor rim frits as seen in photos.
