This Georgian Cross is made with sterling silver pronged closed settings that hold various sizes of foiled, gem cut black dot paste. The pastes are a brilliant clear white. Their brilliance attests to the mastery of this paste maker. There is no corrosion of the foil and one would think light was coming to the stones from all sides.
Paste making was an art form that reached its pinnacle in this period. It is not to be compared with the imitation gems we have today.
A jeweler who succeeded in formulating fine paste kept his method a guarded secret. The stones were artfully faceted. No effort was spared. In many cases, paste stones were more brilliant than gemstones. The stone cutter lost little if he experimented with faceting and damaged a paste. He had to be much more conservative handling diamonds which were frequently rough cut and placed in closed settings.
The lack of intrinsic value did not keep royalty from admiring and acquiring paste jewels. Napolean gave them to Josephine. Queens had private paste makers. The finest at their trade became famous.
This maltese cross has beauty that stops one cold.
The recent publication "Georgian Jewelry" by Ginny Dawes and Olivia Collings marvelously explains the rarity, workmanship, value and care of Georgian Jewelry. Among its subjects is the importance of paste in the 18th and 19th century.

A bouquet of flowers cut out from silver is the attraction of this bracelet which dates to 1870. The floral and leaf display is influenced by the aesthetic movement in which european nations were aware of and admired the art of Japan. Designed to be different and worked with delicacy , the jeweler spiced up the bangle with gold accents.
Most bangles from this period have natural themes and there are many, as the silver industry in Birmingham, England was booming,
This bracelet is unusual in its detail of positive and negative space. It stands out strikingly when worn over the sleeve of a sweater or blouse.

Cut steel was valuable from the inception of its use in jewelry. This labor intensive example was completely executed by hand. Georgian period cut steel contains various sizes of nail heads. Each separate nail head has been multi- faceted like a tiny gem, polished to a shine, then riveted to a back frame that was punched with tiny holes to the jewelers pattern.
Small and smaller floral clusters, swags, and knots of cut steel rivets that symbolize eternity, culminate with teardrops of steel in a mirror polish. Each of the three pendant sections are loosely heart shaped.
In daylight or evening, faceted steel makes a romantic necklace that flickers like diamonds. Like Berlin Iron, is a rarity at this moment in time. Length 16 1/2 in. Height of most central loveknot is 1 10/16 in.

A marvelous and rare scottish brooch is an exciting find. This example, is beautiful and functional. It can be worn all year. The foreground agates are sculpted and curved. They sit like a sunset above the mottled green oval border. Only once in 25 years have I had a brooch that included pink agate. The art of the designer concentrated on the form and sculpting of the stone. Only a trace of the silver frame is apparent on the face. Although I have no photograph of the reverse, I guarantee it is perfect and original, including the pin stem and clasp. Abstract and so modern in design this brooch defies its 19th century origins. Scotland. c. 1860-1880. Excellent condition. Approx 2 1/4 in. wide and 1 1/2 in high.

Antique silver, warm to the eye, blends with grey montrose agate and citrine in this moderate size victorian brooch. The citrine, the color of honey, is set above deeply scrolled engraving in the silver. Grey agates, mosaic set, border the circumference and highlight the shape. At the crown is a plump cushion of agate, a touch that adds dimension and volume to this jewel. Scottish jewelry was adopted by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the last quarter of the 19th century. They were taken by and admired Scotland and its traditions and donned scottish kilts and tartans along with the traditional jewelry. Measurements 1 1/4 in. wide by 1 3/4 in high. Perfect condition.

The hand sculpted and beautifully marked agates in this Victorian brooch are rounded and smoothe as if the ocean had tossed them for ages, yet the brooch with its flowing lines and warm, rich color palette can pass for a unique piece of modern jewelry. The colors range from taupe, to mocha and cream, tiger striped gold, red-brown and caramel. The jeweler who sculpted the scottish agates had experience in his work. The agates rise from their silver setting like plumped pillows. The silver setting is barely visible. This is clearly a jewel that combines the miracle of nature and the skill of man. The form is rare. The color tones are subdued. The condition is perfect. c.1860 -1880. Size approx 2" wide, 7/8ths of an inch high.

This exquisite pendant is made of the finest antique french paste available in the late 18th to early 19th century by the finest of french pastemakers, a young gent named Strass who was jeweller to the king of France. The curved, round and oval sections are set in silver as was appropriate for the period. Strass conceived a chemical formula for glass that remains undiscovered although other pastemakers constantly attempted to duplicate it. The pastes are varied shapes and size. Their settings are tight, a task that took a master. There is no damage to the foiling and so we find brilliant gleaming stones. The form a girandole, a popular design of the time has three suspended drops. Strass made paste and diamond jewels. Paste was not, I stress, not a counterfeit diamond at this time. It was a separate artform that took fine and difficult mastery. Glass in and of itself was difficult to make. This variety of glass is a unique composite of chemicals that form the greater durability of paste and create a brilliant glow. The setting is wonderful. The reverse, rounded and smooth, reveals the hand that made it and begs its own attention. The stones are tight. The condition is perfect. This jewel is a prize , fit for a queen, or for you or I, for the collector of antiques or for all lovers of art and beauty. Fine antique paste has become more and more rare at any price. Made in France late 1700's to 1800. See "Georgian Jewellry" by Ginny Dawes and Olivia Collings and "Antique Paste Jewellry" by M.D.S. Lewis
