| An engagement or wedding gift in the 19th century, this golden lace French cross and heart pendant is a magnificent love token today. Brilliant black dot pastes slightly tinted with blue, are set within raised circles of 18kt gold. The pastes are of the finest quality. Paste of this period was a highly sought after form of jewelry, so valuable that pastemakers kept their formulas a family secret. Marie Antoinette had her own pastemaker! In early 19th century Normandy, a jewel such as this was traditionally given to a young lady in celebration of her betrothal or marriage. It is rare today to find the pendant complete with its original heart. The necklace was worn on a chain, but most often on a ribbon. It was strung as you see it here, with the heart suspended above the cross, or with the heart or the cross alone. Both sections bear the French mark on the reverse. Beware of second glances and “ooh la las”. French, c.1800 and proud of it. Length of both pieces together 3 ¾ inches, width of cross 2 ¼ inches, length of heart alone approximately 1 ½ inches. | ||
