| Suspended by a bow, brilliant foiled georgian pastes form a dove of peace that is set in a rounded silver backing, then fitted to be worn as a brooch or a pendant. The garnet beak carries a flower of green pastes as a love offering. The process of antique paste making was not considered the creation of faux stones, but the culmination of an art form that entailed as much creativity and skill as that employed in diamond workmanship. The process of foiling and enclosing the pastes so that they would endure the elements of pollution was not perfected until the 17th century. For this reason, supreme quality collectible antique paste had a relatively short reign, from the 1700's until 1865. This is an absolutely beautiful and heart warming example of a georgian jewel. It contains varied size pastes, and has the beauty of movement. The dove swings from the bow, thereby adding to the flickering light of the stones. Condition, very fine. Measurements 2 3/4 in. in length, wingspan, 1 3/4 in. English c.1770 - 1820. | |||||
