An antique figural white-metal Art Nouveau table lamp entitled "Muse des Bois" (Muse of the Woods)and signed "W. Hering" for Elsie Ward Hering on the base of the sculpture. The sculpture itself depicts a female figure in flowing drapery with three flowers surrounding her; The bulb sockets are disguised as flowers
Elsie Ward Hering was born c 1872-74 in Fayette, Missouri and began her studies in Denver, Colorado before moving to New York and taking part in the Arts Students League. She would eventually become the assistant of Augustus Saint Gaudens, one of the premier sculptors of the time whose notable works include the sculpture of William T. Sherman in New York's Central park as well as the U.S. $20.00 gold "Double Eagle" coin, among others. In additional to larger works, Elsie Ward Hering also produced smaller pieces such as vases and sculptures. She Died in 1923.
