I rarely feature beaded deco purses, but this one completely enslaved me! The ultimate deco purse, worked in steel and glass beads, it is wonderful in every way. From the stylish pediment celluloid frame with bronze highlights to the fabulous abstract landscape executed in steel and blue glass beads, the purse is a design masterpiece. The lower section looks like a cubist scene; blue glass and steel beads lend it a boldness to balance the frame. Above is an almost lacy forest and sky motif, ...click for details

Gorgeous cut steel beaded figural purse featuring a shepherdess in a landscape, circa 1920. She bears some resemblance to the Butterfly Catchers, except that she appears to be carrying a basket of flowers on her crook, and there seems to be a lamb to her left! The beads have retained their delicate pastel coloring; there’s no rust to mar their sheen. The beading is in great shape, except for a few pieces of missing fringe and some seam separation where the handle one lay. Measures 6 ½” by 5”; ...click for details

Rare early 19th century Masonic purse or pouch, possibly German, depicting Masonic emblems and symbols in brightly colored beads. These purses were often made for the Mason by his wife, expressly to hold his jewels or aprons. The purse is filled with Masonic iconography: it’s easy to identify the hourglass, compass, pillar, square, and acacia sprig. Other symbols are harder to make out. The owner may have been a surveyor or navigator: there is a globe (or possibly an astrolabe), and two fig ...click for details

Wonderful handmade Berlin woolwork purse, from a small, but choice collection, English, circa 1850. Berlin woolwork eclipsed sampler-making and cross stitch from the 1830’s to the 1860’s, when thousands of hand painted patterns (mass-produced in Berlin), including many for purses, were available to English women . Berlin woolwork was worked on canvas in soft German wools, using mostly tent, half-cross, cross and pile stitching. The craze for Berlin woolwork lasted until the late 1860’s, when W ...click for details
