SOLD

Early 19th century lover’s eye miniature, in watercolor on ivory, set into a gold ring, circa 1800-1820. A wonderful tradition in sentimental jewelry, the eye miniature was the most intimate token of love – only the recipient and subject, the lover and beloved, knew the eye’s identity. It was popularized by the Prince of Wale (later George IV), the center of England’s fashionable world, during the last decades of the 18th century. Falling in love with the Catholic Maria Fitzherbert, a taboo f ...click for details

Beautiful 18th century miniature in watercolor on ivory, depicting a woman on shore holding a plaque inscribed with the letter “A”, as a ship sails away in the background. Some call this “'The Sailor's Farewell”; it is certainly meant to mourn the absence of a loved one or a death at sea. The miniature is set into a beautifully crafted period style contemporary gold frame. Condition of the miniature is good; some wear to the hand holding the plaque. Measures 1 3/8” by 1 1/8”, not inc ...click for details

The most spectacular Georgian mourning pendant I have ever seen! Circular in shape, the pendant features a watercolor and hair on ivory scene with a mother and little son grieving at a three dimensional tomb. The detail on this piece is exceptional: the woman wears a long white veil and holds her son by the hand; she weeps into one end of the veil and he weeps into the other. The tomb is built of ivory, hair, gold and pearls: on the base are initial; on the top an urn of hair, trimmed with g ...click for details

A remarkable glass intaglio brooch, carved to depict the profile portrait of Augustus, within a gold twist rope border, signed “MARCHANT F” on the obverse. He was considered one of the foremost gem engravers of his time, known for the brilliant modeling of his subjects. Apparently, a c ...click for details

An outstanding Georgian navette mourning ring, in sepia and watercolor on ivory, circa 1790. It features a pink-cheeked lady leaning on an anchor and gazing out at a ship at sea ? perhaps mourning a lover lost at sea, or merely a symbol (the anchor) of hope! The ring tests at 14-15 carat gold; a pretty rose gold with bright cut scalloped bezel. Inscribed ?FRBC? on the reverse. Very good condition: original crystal is scratched. Size 10 shank is slightly out of round. Head measures 1 1/8? b ...click for details
