A superb, signed example of American miniature portraiture in the waning years of the art, circa the turn of the 19th century! The artist, C. S. Wiltschek, painted several portraits of the Duke family (as in Duke University) which hang in the Lilly Library at the university. The sitter is a regal woman, in pearl, beads and pearl earrings. A wonderful portrait miniature of a gentleman, in watercolor on ivory, signed (“W. J. Baer”) by the artist and dated 1906. William Jacob Baer, a key figure in the American portrait miniature revival, was born in 1860 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied in Munich in the early 1880’s and was the first president of the Society of Painters in Miniature in New York. English School Portrait miniature of gentleman, circa 1820, in watercolor on ivory. The painting is wonderful and colorful; the elderly man’s head is bent and he wears a quizzical expression. He sports a white cravat, canary yellow vest and dark blue coat. The reverse featured beautifully plaited hair with gold cipher initials (JC”, I believe). Good condition; there are some white deposits under the glass on the obverse; and dust on the reverse. Measures 2 1/8” by 1 ½”.

Early 19th century English portrait miniature of a lady, in water color on ivory. Marvelous, primitive style. Lady wears a black dress, white cap, and coral necklace. Set in a gilt metal mount and black papier mache frame. Very good condition; minor dust, and tiny area of paint loss at far edge at 2 o’clock. Measures 2 ¾” by 2 ¼”; framed size is 5” by 4 ¼”.

Continental School portrait miniature of an old soldier, circa 1780, in watercolor on ivory. The elderly sitter is full of character, an old campaigner. He is somewhat stooped, carrying his hat in his left hand and his sword in his right; his belt is quite splendid! Painting is in very good condition, with some dust under the glass. Gilt gesso frame shows wear and chips and some losses to inner border. Sight size 2 ¼” by 1 ¾”; with frame 4 ¾’ by 4 ¼’.
