Exceptional Georgian mourning ring, featuring plaited brown hair overlaid with a gold anchor and chain and a blue enamel banner with the motto "cuncta mea mecum" in gold letters. A bit of research reveals that this motto is associated with the crest of the Stedmans, a family with roots in both Scotland and England – this ring probably came from the latter. The anchor could symbolize either hope and steadfastness or it could indicate a naval career or death at sea. Excellent conditio ...click for details

At first glance, it’s a very fine example of a 19th century mourning brooch, but a closer look shows it’s actually quite extraordinary. On the obverse, there’s a beveled glass compartment with three plaits of hair in different shades of blond. The setting is lovely: a rolled bezel surrounded by pearls surrounded by a beaded border. On the reverse, a tragic inscription mourning the death of three young siblings: “William Wilson Kip/Died 12th Jan 1829/Aed 1 year & 2 months/Catharine Kip/Die ...click for details

$2595

A superb 1st century AD Roman agate intaglio featuring the scene of a parrot confronting a serpent emerging from a nautilus shell, with an overshadowing tree, in an 18th century gold setting. The serpent emerging from a shell is a symbol of life and birth; the parrot is a bird of Bacchus, the God of wine, of life. The engraver has brilliantly used an imperfection in the stone as a part of the image. Size 6 1/2. Face measures 1/2” by 3/8”.

This is one of the loveliest, most poignant Georgian memorials I’ve ever seen, commemorating the death of a child! An angel and a child rise through the sky, the angel pointing toward heaven. The artistry and balance of the composition is amazing; the angel has dark wings and dress and protectively surrounds the sweet child, dressed all in white. They rise heavenward in a blue sky with dark clouds – all elements are beautifully balanced. Wonderful condition; there’s a small spot of dirt at t ...click for details
