Superb mid 19th century gold pique and tortoise shell set, comprising a brooch and pair of earrings. The wing-shaped surmounts suspend smaller drops, three on the brooch and one each on the earrings, creating a grace of movement enriched by the pique stars and dots, and the rich colors of the tortoise. Tortoise shell pique jewelry was popular in the mid to late 19th century: the tortoise was softened by heat and then inlaid with gold or silver decorations. Excellent condition. The craftsmanship of these earrings is remarkable: the lyre-shaped surmounts feature gold strings surrounded by tiny graduated onyx stones; the star points below are interspersed with onyx clusters.
