A portrait miniature in watercolor on ivory of a stunning young lady, by British artist John Barry, circa 1785. She wears a blue dress and a white fichu with a gold brooch. Her unpowdered brown hair curls softly around her face. Barry was active between 1784-1827, when he exhibited at the Royal Academy. The angular eyebrows, brown tones and masses of hair depicted in this painting are all characteristic of his style. Set in the original gold frame. Measures 1 3/4".

Wonderful and evocative self-portrait en grisaille on ivory of an artist, probably French, circa 1810. He poses with his palette and brushes, a canvas on an easel to his right. The portrait reveals the artist’s process: the body and easel are sketched but unfinished; his face and hair are fully and beautifully realized. The painting is set in a gilt and rosewood frame. Appealing and naïve portrait miniature in watercolor on card of a Mrs. Howell of Newfoundland, circa 1830. The lady is wears a white cap and white dress, and is identified in an inscription on the paper backing: “Wife of the pirate Howell (afterwards Johnson) who cruised around Newfoundland. Born circa 1790.” Set in a black lacquered wood frame. Sight size is 2 3/4”. Very good condition; a tiny spot of dirt under glass and backing is loose.

Charming portrait miniature of a baby with a rattle, by Dutch artist Jan Hermanus Melger Tilmes (1819-1870). The baby wears a white bonnet with blue trim and a white dress and is seated in a high chair. The painting is signed “J H M Tilmes 184*”. An inscription on a piece of paper backing identifies the sitter, but is difficult to read. Measures 4 1/2" by 4"; sight size is 2". Good condition; some tiny spots of dirt to the painting.

Beautifully painted miniature in watercolor on ivory of a striking gentleman, identified as Daniel Toper, by English miniaturist Thomas Hargreaves. Hargreaves (1775-1846) was an assistant to Sir Thomas Lawrence and shows his influence; he was a fine artist in his own right. This wonderfully executed portrait is signed on a paper backing "Hargreave painted May 13th, 1837". Measures 3 1/4" by 2 3/4". Great condition. Set in a brown leather traveling case.

A miniature portrait of a pretty young lady, in watercolor on ivory, circa 1850-1860. The young lady wears a bright blue dress with a white lace fill-in, and a gold moonstone brooch; her brown hair is styled in ringlets. Very good condition, with one small area of loss on her left shoulder. Set in a later gilt metal frame, which is slightly too big; painted paper has been set behind the ivory to make up the gap. Measures 2 5/8” by 2 1/2”.
