Portrait miniature in watercolor on ivory of a curly-haired young man, by German artist Josef Krall (fl. c. 1785-1840). The young gent wears a blue coat with a yellow waistcoat and a white stock. He wears a ribbon in red, black and white, probably a medal or order of some kind. The portrait is signed “Krall, pxt. 1818” and set in a period gilt brass brooch frame. Measures 2 1/8” by 1 3/4”. Beautiful portrait miniature of a young woman, possibly American, painted in watercolor on ivory, circa 1835. She wears a black dress, and finely detailed white organdy frill-edged collar over a red scarf. Her hair is set in waves and one can see a tortoise comb at the crown! Set in gilded and carved wood frame. There is indistinct script on the back of the frame, possibly German. Portrait miniature in watercolor on ivory of a clergyman, circa 1780. The sitter was purportedly a resident of Albany NY. He wears a white collar and lace jabot over his black coat; his hair is powdered. Good condition; some mold under the glass on coat (and toward edges) and damage at the very bottom edge. Measures 1 1/2”.

Wonderful and evocative self-portrait en grisaille on ivory of an artist, probably French, circa 1810. He poses with his palette and brushes, a canvas on an easel to his right. The portrait reveals the artist’s process: the body and easel are sketched but unfinished; his face and hair are fully and beautifully realized. The painting is set in a gilt and rosewood frame. Appealing and naïve portrait miniature in watercolor on card of a Mrs. Howell of Newfoundland, circa 1830. The lady is wears a white cap and white dress, and is identified in an inscription on the paper backing: “Wife of the pirate Howell (afterwards Johnson) who cruised around Newfoundland. Born circa 1790.” Set in a black lacquered wood frame. Sight size is 2 3/4”. Very good condition; a tiny spot of dirt under glass and backing is loose.

Charming portrait miniature of a baby with a rattle, by Dutch artist Jan Hermanus Melger Tilmes (1819-1870). The baby wears a white bonnet with blue trim and a white dress and is seated in a high chair. The painting is signed “J H M Tilmes 184*”. An inscription on a piece of paper backing identifies the sitter, but is difficult to read. Measures 4 1/2" by 4"; sight size is 2". Good condition; some tiny spots of dirt to the painting.

Beautifully painted miniature in watercolor on ivory of a striking gentleman, identified as Daniel Toper, by English miniaturist Thomas Hargreaves. Hargreaves (1775-1846) was an assistant to Sir Thomas Lawrence and shows his influence; he was a fine artist in his own right. This wonderfully executed portrait is signed on a paper backing "Hargreave painted May 13th, 1837". Measures 3 1/4" by 2 3/4". Great condition. Set in a brown leather traveling case.

A miniature portrait of a pretty young lady, in watercolor on ivory, circa 1850-1860. The young lady wears a bright blue dress with a white lace fill-in, and a gold moonstone brooch; her brown hair is styled in ringlets. Very good condition, with one small area of loss on her left shoulder. Set in a later gilt metal frame, which is slightly too big; painted paper has been set behind the ivory to make up the gap. Measures 2 5/8” by 2 1/2”.

An English School silhouette portrait of a gentleman in a military costume, circa 1810. He is reverse painted on convex glass in black, and heightened with gold. Set in a turned wood frame. Some losses to paint, but very nice! Backing is missing. Measures 4 1/4” by 3 3/8”; sight size 2 3/4” by 2”.
