Appealing and naïve portrait miniature in watercolor on card of a Mrs. Howell of Newfoundland, circa 1830. The lady is wears a white cap and white dress, and is identified in an inscription on the paper backing: “Wife of the pirate Howell (afterwards Johnson) who cruised around Newfoundland. Born circa 1790.” Set in a black lacquered wood frame. Sight size is 2 3/4”. Very good condition; a tiny spot of dirt under glass and backing is loose.

Charming portrait miniature of a baby with a rattle, by Dutch artist Jan Hermanus Melger Tilmes (1819-1870). The baby wears a white bonnet with blue trim and a white dress and is seated in a high chair. The painting is signed “J H M Tilmes 184*”. An inscription on a piece of paper backing identifies the sitter, but is difficult to read. Measures 4 1/2" by 4"; sight size is 2". Good condition; some tiny spots of dirt to the painting.

Beautifully painted miniature in watercolor on ivory of a striking gentleman, identified as Daniel Toper, by English miniaturist Thomas Hargreaves. Hargreaves (1775-1846) was an assistant to Sir Thomas Lawrence and shows his influence; he was a fine artist in his own right. This wonderfully executed portrait is signed on a paper backing "Hargreave painted May 13th, 1837". Measures 3 1/4" by 2 3/4". Great condition. Set in a brown leather traveling case.

Fabulous set of 19th century Shakudo jewelry, consisting of a brooch and pair of earrings formed as fans, circa 1890. Shakudo refers to the metal alloy forming the base of the set, probably a small percentage of gold mixed with copper. This kind of metal work was employed by Japanese sword makers; when the samurai era ended in the late 1870’s, many sword makers began to make jewelry, often for the western market. Incredible piece of mid 19th century sentimental hair jewelry, probably intended to commemorate the birth of three children, featuring three enameled lockets on a snake chain, all in 18k gold. The three padlock lockets are engraved front and back and enameled on the front with green leaves; they are suspended from a modified figure eight – the symbol for eternity – which flows into the flexible chain.
