A large miniature portrait of a gentleman in watercolor on ivory by William John Thomson, R.S.A. (Anglo-American 1771/3-1845). The gent is seated in a chair before a red curtain, and holds a book in his hand; he wears a black coat with a frilled white cravat and tied stock. His auburn hair waves and curls over his ears! A miniature portrait in watercolor on ivory of an elderly gentleman seated at a table, circa 1800-1820. The gent wears a brown coast and waistcoat, with a white cravat; he sits before a blue cloudy sky. Face is pale, but expressive. Very good condition. Set into a reddish-brown velvet-lined traveling case. Good condition; some dirt on the underside of the glass and a dark spot on the gilt colored mount. Measures 4 3/4” by 4”; sight size is 3 1/4” by 2 1/2”.

A miniature portrait of a hauntingly beautiful woman, in watercolor on ivory, circa 1760-1780. Her long black hair is down; she wears a décolleté gown trimmed with lace. She’s set in a 14k gold frame, originally a bracelet clasp but converted at an early date to a brooch clasp. There’s some mold on the interior of the glass, visible under magnification, and a split on the reverse near the hinge. Measures 1 ¼” by 1”.

An extremely fine enamel on copper miniature portrait of the Calmady children, after Sir Thomas Lawrence, 1824. This portrait is painted (and signed) by Austrian artist Anastasius Huebner (1789-1856), who is listed in Schidlof as a painter on ivory and porcelain. This is a masterpiece of enameling, a perfect miniaturization of one of Lawrence’s best works, featuring brilliant coloration and incredible detail. Charming French portrait miniature in watercolor on ivory of a lady, signed “Boissier 1817.” The lady wears a cream dress with lace fichu or chemise with a brooch at the corsage, and a matching lace cap. The reverse features a gorgeous hair picture featuring a sheaf of wheat surrounded by laurels. All this is executed in a tiny circular format – just wonderful!
