At first glance, it’s a very fine example of a 19th century mourning brooch, but a closer look shows it’s actually quite extraordinary. On the obverse, there’s a beveled glass compartment with three plaits of hair in different shades of blond. The setting is lovely: a rolled bezel surrounded by pearls surrounded by a beaded border. A superb 1st century AD Roman agate intaglio featuring the scene of a parrot confronting a serpent emerging from a nautilus shell, with an overshadowing tree, in an 18th century gold setting. The serpent emerging from a shell is a symbol of life and birth; the parrot is a bird of Bacchus, the God of wine, of life. The engraver has brilliantly used an imperfection in the stone as a part of the image. Size 6 1/2. Face measures 1/2” by 3/8”.

A stunning example of Regency sentimental jewelry and gold work, this gem-set basket pendant is decorated with appliquéd fruit and flowers. Beautifully crafted of two colors of gold, the pendant’s reverse features a piece of black silk under a glazed panel, suggesting it was created to commemorate the death of a loved one. The stones – a turquoise, a ruby, a pink or purple foiled stone, an emerald, and another foiled stone, may spell out a sentimental word, but I can’t decipher it! Rope twist ...click for details
