| Wonderful edition of the hymnal titled “A select collection of hymns, to be universally sung in all the Countess of Huntingdon’s chapels. Collected by her ladyship.” Printed by C. Corall – the flyleaf lists places to purchase the hymnal, including “the back of Mr. Whitefield’s Chapel.” Selina, Countess of Huntingdon (1707-91), was married to the 9th Earl of Huntingdon, whose sister introduced her to Methodist ideas. She chose George Whitefield (1714-70), a charismatic preacher who had been banned by local churches, to become her chaplain. Her power as a peeress enabled her to open private chapels which were used for public preaching of the gospel and led to her sect leaving the Church of England. She compiled this hymnal for use in her chapels, and even supposedly wrote a few hymns herself! Red leather binding, marbled endpapers, presentation inscription reads “E B Drayton ex done Carroline Bull Nov. 7th 1802.” Good condition: wear to binding and corners, foxing to pages, commensurate with age. Measures 3 ¾” by 2 ¼”. | ||||||||
