| Fabulous set of 19th century Shakudo jewelry, consisting of a brooch and pair of earrings formed as fans, circa 1890. Shakudo refers to the metal alloy forming the base of the set, probably a small percentage of gold mixed with copper. This kind of metal work was employed by Japanese sword makers; when the samurai era ended in the late 1870’s, many sword makers began to make jewelry, often for the western market. The brooch in this wonderful set feature three fans decorated with raised birds and flora in a marsh scene. The raised figures are overlaid with gold. The earrings display a similar scene; the birds are slightly different and the overlay is done in gold and silver. It’s possible that the set didn’t start out life together, but it’s beautifully matched. Earrings were converted to posts. Very good condition. Brooch measures 2 1/8” wide; earrings are 1” wide.consisting of a brooch and pair of earrings formed as fans, circa 1890.
