| Superb Irish School portrait miniature in watercolor o ivory of a young officer, circa 1775. This portrait serves as an example of what makes Irish miniatures so wonderful: fine painting and super case work! The young man’s hair is powdered and curled; he wears a scarlet coat with white facings and a silver epaulette, and a white cravat. The painting is set into a gold brooch clasp frame with an engraved and scalloped border. Surrounding the portrait is a fine hair 'belt' border comprising finely woven brown hair and a rose gold buckle at 6 o’clock and a rose gold decoration at the top. The reverse is equally fine, with engraved gold border around a glazed compartment revealing plaited brown. Fabulous condition overall: there may have once been a hanging loop at the top. Measures 2 3/8” by 2”; sight size is 1 1/2” by 1 1/8”. | |||||||
