| Wonderful portrait miniature of a group of seven children, six young girls and a baby, by Swiss artist Henri Louis Convert (1789-1863). They emerge from a rosy cloud background: two girls wear white dresses, two wear pink, and two blue – the baby wears nothing! Their hairstyles are each different, from braided pigtails to braids looped over the ears, to braids shaped at the back. One wonders if they or all related, or if the colors in their dresses indicate siblings! The artist’s signature – “Convert pinxit/1839” -- is located between the two girls at the bottom. Set into a gilded wood frame with an acanthus leaf border. Convert was born in Colombier in 1789 and studied art in Geneva and Zurich, exhibiting in Berne, Neuchâtel, Zurich and Berlin. The painting is in very good condition; the ivory is slightly wavy and slightly smaller than the frame; there is a nick at the top left corner. The frame shows some scuffing and three of the four applied decorations on the inside corners are slightly damaged. Measures 7 3/8” by 7 1/4”; sight size is 4 3/8” square. | |||||||
