| Very nice portrait miniature in watercolor on ivory, of a young gentleman by Scottish artist Patrick McMor(e)land (1741 – after 1809), circa 1770. The sitter is a handsome young gentleman with powdered hair tied back, wearing a beige coat, a white waistcoat and a white cravat. The signature “P.M.” is faint but visible, located at the 4 o’clock edge, just over the sitter’s shoulder. McMor(e)land was a highly accomplished artist who worked in Scotland, Manchester, London and Liverpool; he exhibited at the Society of Artists, the Royal Academy, and in Liverpool. He lectured on and taught art in Manchester in 1809. His work is represented in several major museums, including the Victorian and Albert, the British, and the National Portrait Gallery. Set into a gold bracelet clasp frame with brooch clasp on the reverse. Measures 1 1/2” by 1 1/8”. | |||||
