| Wonderful portrait miniature in watercolor on ivory of a gentleman, by Jeremiah Meyer, R.A. (Anglo-German, 1735-1789). The gentleman’s hair is powdered, curled and worn en queue. He wears a powder blue coat, a white waistcoat with gold embroidered border, a lace frilled shirt and a white stock. One of the finest miniaturists of the 18th century, Meyer was born in Germany to an artistic family and moved to England when he was fourteen. Was a student of Zinke; later became miniaturist to the Queen and painter in enamel to the King. Founding member of the Royal Academy, his work appears in the collections of the Queen, and the Victoria and Albert, British, and Ashmolean Museums. Set in a gold pendant frame. Condition is very good; there is some fading, especially to the face, as is common with Meyer's miniatures. Measures 1 5/8” by 1 3/8”. | |||||
