| A superb 1st century AD Roman agate intaglio featuring the scene of a parrot confronting a serpent emerging from a nautilus shell, with an overshadowing tree, in an 18th century gold setting. The serpent emerging from a shell is a symbol of life and birth; the parrot is a bird of Bacchus, the God of wine, of life. The engraver has brilliantly used an imperfection in the stone as a part of the image. Size 6 1/2. Face measures 1/2” by 3/8”. | ||||||||
