| At first glance, it’s a very fine example of a 19th century mourning brooch, but a closer look shows it’s actually quite extraordinary. On the obverse, there’s a beveled glass compartment with three plaits of hair in different shades of blond. The setting is lovely: a rolled bezel surrounded by pearls surrounded by a beaded border. On the reverse, a tragic inscription mourning the death of three young siblings: “William Wilson Kip/Died 12th Jan 1829/Aed 1 year & 2 months/Catharine Kip/Died 19th June 1836/Aged 11 years & 6 mos/Anna C. Kip/Died 3rd Oct 1836/Aged 1 year & 2 mos”. The Kips were an old Dutch family, who first came to New York in (Kip’s Bay was located at what is now East 34th Street in Manhattan) in 1635. These siblings were three of the six children of Leonard William Kip and Anna Corbet of New York City. One of their surviving brothers was probably Leonard Kip, well-known attorney and writer. This is a wonderful memorial artifact from New York’s history. Excellent condition. Measures 1 3/8” by 1”. | |||||
