Extraordinary Bracelet Clasp "In Spite of Envy" ca 1780
Extraordinary English bracelet clasp with an enigmatic depiction of a pair of burning hearts atop a wreathed monument, entwined by a serpent and bearing the inscription “In Spite of Envy”, circa 1780. Painting in watercolor and sepia on ivory, this miniature is surrounded by seed pearls and set in 18k rose gold. Much of the symbolism of this piece has become murky in the 200 plus years since it was created, and one could interpret it in different ways – as a mourning piece or as a sentimental token. If it’s a mourning jewel, the pearls could be seen as tears, the trees (probably cypresses) as pointing toward heaven, the crown as the “Crown of Life” (given to those who deserve heaven), the flaming hearts as divine love – and the serpent as an earthly menace to that love. But, the clasp iconography makes more sense if it’s seen as a piece of sentimental jewelry, steeped in the religious ideals that elevate and honor that love. Pearls can be seen as symbols of purity and love; the cypress also symbolizes hope; and the crown can signify victory and triumph. The flaming hearts denote a love so pure and passionate that it burns with a divine fire; the snake represents life, health and eternal love. The message of this wonderful piece proclaims: our love is so strong, it will flourish in spite of the envy of others less blessed. However you choose to interpret it, this clasp is a rare and beautiful object! It is in excellent condition. Measures 1 1/4”.
