| Beautiful 18th century mourning miniature, in watercolor on ivory, featuring a kaleidoscope of little scenes. The large central shield-shaped tableau depicts a woman laying a wreath over two doves on a tomb. Around the perimeter are three smaller similar scenes: one of a woman laying a vine on a tomb, one of a woman laying a wreath on a flaming heart on a tomb, and one very unusual scene similar to the latter – except that the woman (and the entire scene) is black. Interspersed with these are tiny landscapes, one with a horse and rider. The reverse is very interesting: on a ground of blue silk lies a thin copper oval, decorated with a fabric cross. Bright vivid colors; excellent condition. Measures 2 5/8” in diameter. | |||||||||
