| Superb mid 19th century gold pique and tortoise shell set, comprising a brooch and pair of earrings. The wing-shaped surmounts suspend smaller drops, three on the brooch and one each on the earrings, creating a grace of movement enriched by the pique stars and dots, and the rich colors of the tortoise. Tortoise shell pique jewelry was popular in the mid to late 19th century: the tortoise was softened by heat and then inlaid with gold or silver decorations. Excellent condition. Brooch measures 1 3/4” by 1 3/4”; the earrings are 1 3/4” from top of the wire to bottom. | ||||||
