Georgian Mourning Brooch, "Affection Weeps"
Wonderful all-original 18th century mourning brooch, in sepia and hair on ivory. Set in 9k gold with a blue enamel border, the scene depicts two women in classical dress mourning at a tomb with an urn; one leans on an anchor, which may indicate that the mourned gent was a seafaring man, or may just be a symbol of hope or death. The tomb’s dedication reads: “Affection weeps, heaven rejoices”. The reverse features a compartment with braided hair with the inscription: “Harry Scrase Farncombe/Obt 31 May 1794 aet 49”. Farncombe was born in 1752 in West Blatchington, a small village near Brighton, England. He was married to Philadelphia Hamshar and had a daughter of the same name. Good condition; some dirt under the glass. Measures 1 5/16” by 3/4”.
