| Rare and wonderful early 19th century mourning brooch, probably American, in 9k gold. The brooch is formed in an unusual curved square. It features gold cipher “JY” (or “TY”) laid over white-blond hair laid on a bed of black silk. The white enamel border, which symbolizes a child or an unmarried person, is inscribed with gold letters: “His Hair/Wove Here/His Memory/In My Soul”. The reverse is inscribed “Died/April 25:1806/Aged 19”. Very good condition; hinge has an old repair; black silk has shredded into a few small loose pieces. Measures 13/16” square. | |||||
