Abstract Gouache painting by David Ratner 1922-2005
This great abstract painting "Orange Interior" signed by David Ratner measures; 7" x 5" (14" x 11" with frame.) ............................David Ratner, resident of Natick, MA, was born June 14, 1922, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Educated at the Minneapolis School of Art, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, and the Academy de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris, Ratner's works are packed with color and a distinctive mark making that reveals the precise hand of a draftsman. Ratner taught drawing and painting at Boston University for 15 years, until he became professor emeritus upon retirement. Reminiscent of Cubism, his work is full of fragmented shapes, varied color and allegorical settings. Picasso is undoubtedly a painter who influenced Ratner's sensibilities to line, shape and color. Henri Matisse and Pieter Brueghel were also inspirational to his work. This exhibit of David Ratner's recent drawings and gouache paintings at the Danforth Museum of Art clearly demonstrates the artist's passion and dedication to craft, as well as a sensitive interpretation of a world that is both representational and abstract. David Ratner has exhibited at galleries and museums across the country, including Katzen-Brown Gallery, NYC; David Brown Gallery, Provincetown, RI; Boston University Art Gallery, Boston; the List Center of Visual Arts at MIT, Cambridge, MA; the DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, MA; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and Suzanne Kohn Gallery, St. Paul, MN
