It is stunning that although each of these lion bookends is hand-carved in wood (I think oak) and are not molded or cast. Each depicts the "Lion of Lucerne" which commemorates the death of Swiss soldiers guarding Marie Antionette in 1792. The sculpture by Bertel Thorwaldsen was unveiled in 1822, and has been the continuing subject of artists ever since, making a highly appropriate souvenir of Switzerland. Measuring 7 1/2" long and 5" high, these carved bookends (weighted for ...click for details

This building-shaped Mauchlinware bank commemorates the Bridge at Ballochmyle, some thirty miles outside of Glasgow, Scotland, and was a souvenir from that area. The area is notable as Robert Burns country. It measures 3 1/2" long, 3" high to the chimney pots, and 2 1/4" deep. It is in good, but well used condition, with the expected wear of what might have been used as a toy. The bottom has a slip opening (see photo) where the bank could be emptied. It was manufactured in Great B ...click for details

This strikingly fanciful hand-painted pencil box from the American Southwest, dates from the early years of the Twentieth Century. The birds, each marvelously and imaginatively colored, no doubt, flew around only in the creative artist's mind, but have landed on this luscious, naive mahogany pencil box. The box seems to be painted in think, uneven layers if enamel, and there is some rubbing to the surfaces. The box measures 8 5/8" x 4 3/4" by 1 1/4" high. There are two chips i ...click for details

This coquilla nut box, constructed of a number of parts assembled and "sculpted" into this box, has typical 18th Century designs, including a dog, and a serious of rather crudely carved objects including a quiver with arrows clustered around other objects which may symbolize warfare (just a guess). Although it may have another Eureopean source, my guess is that the box is French. The box measures 2 3/8" long, 2" wide and 1 1/2" high. There are three spots where there are ...click for details

This small box of painted treen, fresh from a Washington DC diplomatic family, came down through the Swiss side of the family. It measures 2 5/8" in diameter, and 1 1/8" high. It is painted with the palest of aqua ground decorated in pastel shades with a rather faded pastoral scene which includes a woman and dog. The border has a delightully designed design reminiscent of Swiss wedding boxes. The lid fits well and opens to reveal an unpainted interior. Other than 200+ years of normal w ...click for details

Here we have one of those delightful items that just "speaks to us". It is an Anri carved figural tobacco humidor, which depicts a smoker red-faced and in his cups leaning on the top of a barre. Lift him up, and the barrel opens, creating a space for tobacco. The head, on a swiveling neck, moves as the piece is moved. Accompanying this is the auction print out showing that it came from the estate of Fred MacMurray and June Haver.
