This silver plaque, mounted in an early, carved and gilt frame, dates from the first quarter of the Nineteenth Century. It features a mounted-on-velvet silver plaque depicting what appears to be the presentation of the head of John the Baptist to Salome, who ordered his death. The frame, which has been beautifully restored, measures 7" x 7" square. This hand-carved interpretation of a monk measures 15 3/4" in height, and is 4" square at the base. It shows great skill by the carver in execution of the life-like, rotund and benevolent features. It is in excellent condition, and dates from the middle of the last century. I suspect it to be European in origin.
