I found this rather extraordinary vase among a cache of Japanese items brought back from a trip to the Orient between the two wars, in 1929. The design is reminiscent of some Scythian figures, or art of the nomadic peoples of the North. Not only is the design dramatic and colorfully decorated, but also the texture of the vase makes me uncertain whether it is lacquer, or some composition.
