From the era when folks seems charmed and fascinated by jocular monks, priests, cardinals, and all characters ecclesiastical, comes this watercolor of a laughing monk reading a newspaper. The face is animated and sophisticated, and the entire depiction well conceived and executed. Painted in France, c. 1920 and signed "Vally" in brush in the lower left, the entire work, measuring 9 1/2" x 7 5/8" in a "rope design" frame is in excellent condition.

This nude by Wallace Bassford (1900 - ?), measures 12" x 9" in a frame measuring 16 1/4" x 13 1/2" (cm 31 x 23, 42 x 35), and is signed with a scrafitto/pencil signature in the lower right. It is done in the wistful, impressionistic pastels one expects from this artist. With the painting are two exhibition brochures from Palm Beach Galleries from whom it was purchased in 1966. This deco or modernist vase has a fine patina and stands 11 1/2" high and measures 8" in diameter and 5" at the mouth of the opening. The bulbous shape is decorated simply with horizontal lines running the circumference of the vase at different heights from the base. It is unmarked (see detail) except for a "W" on the base.

This rather charming painting of (I think) a clarinetist measures 9 x 11 1/2" and is in a frame measuring 12 1/2 x 16". The surface appears to be quite dark (dirty) and could use a cleaning, but the surface is in very good condition. A fragment of the picture board with stationer's sticker is visible on the back, and since one can read "St Louis, I am guessing American, late 19th Century. Unsigned.

This extraordinary example of Art Nouveau, bought in France about thirty years ago, depicts a very lovely lady with a Viking-like headdress which is executed in a beaten, copper headdress with embedded glass "jewels". With only the slightest bit of loss to the headdress, this marvelous collage of paint, metal and glass is on a 12 38" diameter wooden plaque. Dressed in a lovely summer frock and an attractive bonnet, this portrait miniature painted on ivory is a beautiful, small monument to the artist, who may be the "Perrin" written on the stone pillar in the lower right. The frame, which appears to be hand-carved oak with brass studs and tiny mother of pearl inlay dots, measures 4 1/"x 3 1/4". There are two tiny rubbed spots at 11 O'Clock on the miniature, all other white areas on the periphery are reflections on the glass. ...click for details
