Whimsy takes on a new dimension with the German Jack-in-the-box dating from the last quarter of the Nineteenth Century in Germany. The box is manufactured of wood covered in a printed paper, and held closed with a hook. Inside is a cloth-covered spring dressed as a clown, complete with papier mache face and a beard.
