This plaster mask of Herodotus, the Greek historian, dates from the late Nineteenth Century, and likely graced the wall a secondary school or college drama classroom.
It measures 14 1/2" high, 10" wide, and 7 1/2" deep. There is a steel hook embedded in the rear top for hanging. The piece was rather carelessly painted, although the effects are imposing. There are some mold marks on the forehead where the plaster mold was for the piece. In superb condition, with commensurate wear ...click for details

Although Ottoman Turk prisoners of war in the First World War are the source of most of these fascinating, little beaded items, it is likely Russian and other nationalities also manufactured these items in the 1915 - 1918 time period. I, for one, find them a delight. This is perhaps the third one that I have owned, and never cease to admire the handwork, and wonder where the materials came from and how they happened to choose this format. But here it is - a wonderful example of this elusive art ...click for details

These three porcelain butterflies, assembled in this tiny collection, are each lovely and colorful. One is marked with a German or Sitzendorf mark, and one is marked Goebel butterfly. It appears that the green and red deco style butterfly was a place card holder. Each is in excellent shape. The largest measures 3" high and 3" wide.

This lot of three aqua Chinese Peking glass plates each measures just under 8 1/4". The color is the vibrant aqua that the Chinese mastered so well in this art form. There are minor rubbing and tiny chips on the edges of each.
Since every antique should have a story, here is the one I have created for these.
Kowloon, Hong Kong was always a floating slum crowned with beautiful, cool ivied mansions. Jiao Bian Bai lived in one of those mansions. His mother Lee Syiang, collected beautiful thi ...click for details

This small box of painted treen, fresh from a Washington DC diplomatic family, came down through the Swiss side of the family. It measures 2 5/8" in diameter, and 1 1/8" high. It is painted with the palest of aqua ground decorated in pastel shades with a rather faded pastoral scene which includes a woman and dog. The border has a delightully designed design reminiscent of Swiss wedding boxes. The lid fits well and opens to reveal an unpainted interior. Other than 200+ years of normal w ...click for details

This is a striking piece of metalwork, although exactly how it is made is somewhat of a mystery. There is a gilded and embossed Art Nouveau feeling leaves and flowers, superimposed upon what I think is iron. The entire, piece which is a straight-edge and a page cutter (for cutting unseparated quarto or octavo pages, etc., in a printed book), measures 11 7/8" in length. On the center of the front is the coat of arms of Sweeden. Although the piece shows wear, the condition is good, and the d ...click for details
