In those luscious, rich Kutani greens and brick red, this koro or covered jar measures 8 1/2" high and 5 1/2" handle to handle. The design features the "faceless" monks in a brick read field, and a monk or dharuma finial. The mark, (pictured) is difficult to photograph, but is definitely a Kutani mark. Japan late Meiji, c. 1910. Excellent condition with a few glaze flakes, or perhaps just the result of careless glazing.

With a rich ko-kutani palette of brink red, blue, and forest green, this small teapot makes a colorful splash! It is decorated with a lion attended by several monks, none of whom have a face. I have actually seen several items, both kutani and imari, decorated in this manner. The piece which is in excellent condition, although missing its reed handle, measures 6" wide by 5 1/2" high - Japan, c. 1880.
