Bookends, Hand-Carved Lion of Lucerne c. 1910
It is stunning that although each of these lion bookends is hand-carved in wood (I think oak) and are not molded or cast. Each depicts the "Lion of Lucerne" which commemorates the death of Swiss soldiers guarding Marie Antionette in 1792. The sculpture by Bertel Thorwaldsen was unveiled in 1822, and has been the continuing subject of artists ever since, making a highly appropriate souvenir of Switzerland. Measuring 7 1/2" long and 5" high, these carved bookends (weighted for strength) are in excellent condition with patina normal for their age (c. 1900).
