| I never cease to be amazed by small boxes in all their variety and plethora of design and construction. This one is no exception. There is a rather Eighteenth Century cut-out glued to the pale-yellow pale top, and then lacquered over. Bits of the detail are missing, but in a tantalizing, naive manner. On the inside of the box is painted in black "Lacquer, French chinoiserie 18 Centy Chinoiserie" which leads me to believe that it is a 19th Century pastiche simulating an earlier piece. But most fascinating of all is the rather hand forged-looking hinge visible in the picture. Never seen anything like it. It measures 3 1/4" x 2 1/4" x 1". In well-used condition, but reeking of charm, c. 1900, but of unknown nationality. | ||||||
