19th Century German Jack-In-The-Box, c, 1880
Whimsy takes on a new dimension with the German Jack-in-the-box dating from the last quarter of the Nineteenth Century in Germany. The box is manufactured of wood covered in a printed paper, and held closed with a hook. Inside is a cloth-covered spring dressed as a clown, complete with papier mache face and a beard. There is normal wear from use-his nose is flattened from rubbing against the inside of the box, but still lively and functional after some 125 years of use and enjoyment. It measures 2" high closed, and approximately 4 1/2 opened and sprung.
