6 Imperial Monogram Demitasse Silver-Gilt Spoons
Measuring 3 7/8" long these silver gilt demitasse spoons, recently acquired from descendants of royalty in a Washington, D.C. estate, appear to have been inspired by the designs of the British silversmith George Adams, who made these ornate grape motif designs so popular in the early Nineteenth Century. Often pieces were recast from the originals when owners needed additional pieces at a later date, to supplement lost or damaged original pieces. Since these have no hallmarks of any kind, I suspect that this was the case with these spoons. It is possible that these are similar to some silver owned by Kirill Vladimirovich Romanov, Grand Duke Kirill: hence the K under a seven point crown. This is only a guess. But certainly the spoons date from the last quarter of the Nineteenth Century, if not earlier, and have been passed down to a family in the Russian community in Washington, D.C., they are in excellent condition.
