| In a frame measuring 22" across, and 16 1/2" high, this gorgeous antique English fan (fan itself is 11") depicts what I believe to be the introduction of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Although she is often depicted as a Nubian princess with dark skin, occassionally the artist would depict her otherwise. The frieze shows normal wear at the creases, but seems not to be missing anything. The fan papier mache "blades" or spines show some losses of (I think) of mother of pearl. The entire piece presents well, and has a not intact (see photo) stating that it was bought before 1888. The whole is carefully, and beautifully framed in a fan-shaped shadow box under glass, which could be hung. Since I was photographing through glass, there is a fuzziness to the images which does not appear to the eye. English, c. 1880 | |||||||||
