Ethel Pearce Nerger "Abstract" oil 1948
Ethel Pearce Nerger (American 1901-1985), "Thistle by Through" 1948, oil/gouache on board, signed lower right, 40" x 26", original period wood frame and linen matte (stained)46 1/2" x 32 1/2". This work was exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Art in 1957, exhibition label on verso. Great provenance for this work. ETHEL PEARCE NERGER (American 1901-1985) E.P. Nerger began her career as an artist , painting, in 1936. She attended the California School of Fine Arts studying under Spencer Mackly, Nelson Poole, Otis Oldfield, Robert Howard, William Gaw and David Park. In 1947, she worked in ceramics with Carlton Ball and in design with Marian Hartwell and Stanley Hayter. Nerger moved to San Francisco in 1932, where she was most active as an artist in the 1940ís and 50ís, including one-woman shows at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, the Oakland Museum and the Santa Barbara Museum. She also exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Nerger was a member of San Francisco Women Artists, the California Art Association and Artists Equity.
