| Monumental Canosan Pottery Figural Vase, Apulia Italy, ca. 3rd Century BCE, 19 1/4" high. Canosan vases combine the arts of the potter and the maker of terracotta figurines. Most are on a grand scale and coated in white slip and painted in vivid blues, yellows and pinks and are further adorned with moulded attachments such as figures of Victory, winged horses or Medusa heads. These vases were obviously too fragile for daily use and appear to have been made exclusively for the tomb. The bottoms of these vessels are left open rendering them useless to the living. Ex: Costas Lemonopoulous collection, Florida. | |||||||||||
