| Three Japanese Edo Period (Circa 1860 C.E.) Ivory Netsuke heads from the Noh Theater. Each incised with various characters of the theater and signed on reverse by artist. Netsuke #1. Hannya, the female Demon. The expression of this mask is a fusion of jealousy, grudge, sorrow, and grief of women. It has a demonic appearance with two horns, knitting her brows and stiffening her cheeks. Netsuke #2. Enmei-Kaja the Old Man Mask. He is the son of Chichi-no-jô. The mask has a sunny face that looks as if Okina has got some years younger, and makes people blessed with its happy look suitable for the celebrative play. Netsuke #3. Ko-omote, a girl of fifteen or sixteen, the youngest woman represented by the masks, with purity, beauty and virginity. "Ko" in Ko-omote means pretty or lovely. All in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Size of each is approximately 1 3/4" high. | ||||||
