| This is a marvelous pair of European 17th or 18th Century embroidered Coats of Arms on their original burgundy velvet remnants. The Royal looking panels appear to be either French or Spanish and most likely came from chair backs or possibly draperies. Both textile pieces are framed like a fine work of art and would look wonderful in a library or a formal dining room. Richly embroidered, each coat of arms is slightly different with both detailed in gold cording and bordered in burgundy cording. Although slightly different, the left side of both shields depicts the same charges, with the upper quarter having a charge of a castle or tower set against a vert field and the lower quarter with three fleur-de-lys in a field of azure. The right side of one shield is quartered with a charge of a lion in a field of vert over three swords in a field of azure. The other panel has the right side of the shield with a charge of what looks to be a sea horse or sea creature in a field of vert. Each piece is handsomely framed with burl wood trimmed in black, with the panels floated atop a lush deep green suede background, all under glass. Although now protected, each panel does show its age, as you can see by the worn and slightly discolored velvet. The relative rarity of this splendid pair of textiles surviving over the centuries, is a testament to the quality and handwork done over 200 years ago for the aristocracy. Serious inquiries welcome.
