Sonia Delaunay [1885-1979] was born in Russia and raised in St. Petersburg. She studied art in Germany and in 1905 at the Academie de la Palette in Paris where her early work was influenced by the Fauves. In 1910 she married Robert Delaunay. She did not exhibit her art work again until 1953 which was 12 years after her husband’s death. With her husband she developed a style known as orphism which was a colorful spin-off of cubism. Early on she was involved in fashion and theatrical design. |
