KARL KASTEN [b.1916]An oil on canvas painting signed and dated 1960 lower right. Signed, dated and titled verso “El Toro”. Attached to the stretcher bar is an exhibition label from the California Palace of the Legion of Honor where it was exhibited Dec. 1961. It measures 60"x48" and is framed in artist's slats. Karl Kasten was born in San Franciscoand trained in art at the California School of Fine Art and received his M.A. from Un. of California at Berkeley. He was a student of Hans Hofmann and is known for his abstract paintings as well as a print maker. He taught at the California School of Fine Art, Un. of Michigan, SF State College and at UC Berkeley from 1950-1983. He exhibited at the de Young Museum, California Palace of the Legion of Honor, Art Institute of Chicago, San Francisco Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of Art among others. His works are held by San Francisco Museum of Art, Oakland Art Museum, NY Museum of Modern Art, de Young Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum among others. |
