Intrinsically Unique Combining ancient relics with the creativity of local artists.
Gudai is the result of a coincidence of specialized conservation techniques developed over months of research with a desire to share the beauty of archaic bronzes beyond the collectors community. Constantly evolving, Gudai has now grown to encompass a variety of materials including jade, shell, various softstones, and glass.
Currently, most of the work displayed uses the hand braided Kumihimo cording of Jan Prichard Cohen. A Bainbridge Island resident and an artist with a background in Chinese art history, she combines her interest in ancient Japanese cord-making techniques with her experience in working with metal to create intricate and beautiful yet also subtle settings for the various antiquities. Her quote, noted below, explains much of both her aesthetic approach as well as the motivation behind this project in general.
"What I have realized is that what I have learned through my interest in traditional Japanese cord making techniques and over long years working with metal is compatible with these ancient works of art. I believe that what we are doing is giving significance to what might otherwise be overlooked."
