Kumihimo Necklace with Authentic Ancient Bronzes
Ah, the necklace signaled the end of my belthook collection. Woven into one side of this intricate yet broad Kumihimo cord is a decorated bronze belthook from my own collection. Dating to the Warring States Period (China, 475-221 B.C.), a subtle shadow of the original sworls of the inlaid decoration it once had still show, highlighted by the bits of red cuprite and green malachite that remain. On this necklace, it functions much as it was orignally designed to, hooking into an integrated loop which joins the two ends of the cord, which is in turn tied with a very finely woven version of the primary cord. Meant to be worn off to one side, the Warring States Period belt hook is counter balanced on the other side by four Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.)bronze buttons, the gold which covers them shining through remnants of green and red encrustation. Jan Prichard Cohen made losing this belthook much easier to swallow for me in the design she hand wove for it. Measurements: Belthook is 5.8cm in length (2.3"), four gilt bronze buttons 1.4cm - 1.8cm in diameter (.4" - .7"); cord is 61cm (24") long and 1.5 cm. (.6") wide.
